Policom, a Florida based independent economic research firm, placed Plattsburgh #26 in 2020, up from #40 the previous year. This maintained Plattsburgh's place as the strongest micropolitan area in New York State. The next highest ranking in the state was Oneonta at #75.
In 2017, fDi Magazine (Foreign Direct Investment), a publication of the Financial Times of London, ranked Plattsburgh #8 among all micropolitan cities in North and South America, as a "Micro American City of the Future". The city rankings are released every two years as part of an analysis of various sized cities in the Western Hemisphere, with micro cities being those with less than 100,000 population. They also ranked Plattsburgh #3 for Economic Potential and #2 for Foreign Direct Investment Strategy.
