Quality of life

Our Neighbors: Canada, Vermont & New York City

Located just one hour from downtown Montreal, Quebec, Plattsburgh is considered by many to be Montreal's U.S. suburb and we enjoy the ease of enjoying the culture of such a diverse, international city right on our doorstep.

A short drive or ferry ride across Lake Champlain is Vermont, with its own dynamic culture to explore. Discover the Green Mountains, relax at one of their world-famous craft breweries or spend time shopping at a mall or browsing unique downtown stores.

To the south is New York City, within a five hour drive or a more relaxed, scenic passenger rail journey with Amtrak, who provide daily connections between the Big Apple and Montreal.

A Better Education at Our Colleges & Universities

Plattsburgh enjoys being home to two state colleges. State University of New York at Plattsburgh (SUNY) is a highly regarded liberal arts college offering more than 70 academic programs in humanities, science, education, and more - including hard-to-find degrees like expeditionary studies and robotics.

Clinton Community College is located on the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain, offering traditional and nontraditional students access to a variety of educational programs taught by a highly dedicated faculty. Additionally, they offer training opportunities for students and local employees in their state-of-the-art facility, the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing.

By rail, Amtrak’s famous Adirondack line (once named “one of the most beautiful train rides in the world” by National Geographic) runs from the Hudson Valley through the Adirondack Mountains, along Lake Champlain to Montreal. The stop in downtown Plattsburgh is at one of our charming historic buildings.

We are well-connected with the Interstate highway system, with New York’s I-87 running directly through the region connecting us to New York City to the south and Route 15 and the Trans-Canada Highway to the north.
